TARTAN WEEK 2015

While so many aspects of Scottish heritage have influenced North American culture that it’s easy to take them for granted, it’s always a grand occasion to celebrate them during Tartan Week, which will be unfolding from April 6-11. The expanding slate of events, featuring daily concerts, parties, and of course capped off by the 17th Annual Tartan Day Parade down Sixth Avenue on Saturday, April 11th, was announced at St. Andrews restaurant, at 140 West 46 Street – a site of a number of the events in store.

SOHO TIFFIN JUNCTION

Located at 42 East 8th Street, on the same block as Cantor Film Center, Soho Tiffin Junction [www.sohotiffin.com] is something truly new in the constellation of restaurants proximal to NYU – and seems poised to appeal to the sort of international students and faculty who comprise a growing segment of the NYU community. When I observed to proprietor Jawahar Chirimar that the menu options seem similar to Chipotle (a branch of which is just down the street), yet with a fundamentally different emphasis on cuisine, ingredients and seasonings, he conceded that is no accident – and it’s that very simple and healthful presentation of options with regards to placing your order that make Soho Tiffin Junction seem at once familiar while somewhat exotic.

WINTER TRAVELS IN QUEBEC

Considering that I am the sort of traveller undeterred by the cold – I made my first visit to Sweden in the month of December – when I had the opportunity to journey to Quebec during the waning days of this winter, I was eager to go. I had only been to Montreal in the Province previously, and while I love that city and its at once cosmopolitan and locally distinctive character, I had never experienced the landscape or countryside that has shaped and molded the Francophone domain of our neighbor to the north.
